The Making of The Freelance Philosopher
A bit of background of the events that lead to me starting The Freelance Philosopher
My Background.
I was born and grew up in the U.S. My family moved many times (about every 3-4 years) during my life so I never really had a hometown.
I went to high school in Colorado Springs, Colorado and did my undergraduate studies at Colorado State University from 2007 to 2011 where I majored in philosophy and political science. During my 3rd year of undergrad (2009-2010), I spent a year studying abroad in Berlin, Germany at Freie Universität.
From there, I went on to do a Masters of Arts in Philosophy at Talbot School of Theology (Biola University) in Los Angeles, California between 2011 to 2014. As you might have guessed by the name, Talbot is a Protestant Christian Seminary. My coursework focused largely on philosophical theology and philosophy of religion.
I then moved to the University of Hawaii in Honolulu to do my Ph.D. in philosophy focusing on non-Western philosophy from 2014-2017. I took seminars in Arab, Islamic (an important distinction to make), Chinese, Indian, and Japanese philosophy. My research focus was on Japanese philosophy and religion. While at UH, I got the chance to teach my own course on logic which was a lot of fun.
In 2017, I got the chance to be a researcher at Kyoto University for 2 years to conduct research related to my dissertation on Japanese Philosophy of Language. The idea was to focus on the often ignored linguistic aspect of buddhist and Japanese philosophy. To that end, I not only wrote but worked on original translations of never before translated philosophical texts.
